Roster changes begin for the Mets

According to FoxSports, Ken Rosenthal, the New York Mets have claimed first baseman Andy Phillips off waivers. Phillips was designated for assignment this past Sunday by the Cincinnati Reds. This move will surely leave many Mets fans scratching their heads, as it makes no sense whatsoever.
Phillips is a former New York Yankees prospect who could never really cut it at the major league level. Some argue he didn’t get enough of a chance to prove himself (i.e. not enough regular at bats), I say he just wasn’t that good of a player. He had flashes but the guy just didn’t have the bat to go with the superb defensive skills. So I guess thinking about it, he’s not that good of a player so he does belong on the Mets.
Back to the actual deal thou. The Mets most likely bring Phillips in to platoon with the lefty Carlos Delgado, who is having a pretty bad season. He’d get the start at first against lefties, and then be a right-handed pinch-hitter off the bench the other days. Here’s the catch thou. Phillips is horrific against lefties, in his career he has had 163 at-bats against them, batting only a .209 with 2 homers. No surprise that the Mets didn’t consider this.
Rosenthal also hints that this move happened because of Wayne Krivsky. Krivsky is the former Reds general manager, he was fired back in April and was the guy who brought Phillips to the Reds. He was signed just this week as a Special Assistant to General Manager Omar Minaya.
The Mets brass just keeps churning out nothing but great moves. It’s a great time to be a Mets fan isn’t it boys? Here’s the Ken Rosenthal piece about this.
On a side note, have you had a chance to check out Shea Stadium? It’s the final year of the big orange dump and even with it being a dump you should go check out a piece of Major League history before its gone. There’s still time and with Mets fans jumping off the bandwagon there are plenty of seats available.
