Could the Green Bay Packers be looking into Jason Taylor? According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the Packers have made an exploratory inquiry with the Miami Dolphins in regards to Taylor. It’s no secret that Taylor has wanted out of Miami, but this is interesting timing as reports have said the sides semi-made up and Taylor was willing to play out his contract for the Dolphins. Taylor wants to play for a Super Bowl contender. The Packers even without Brett Favre, should be in the NFC playoff hunt. Is this is a good match , is it really a possibility???
Based on pure need this deal does make sense. It’s looking like the Packers are going to have a hole at the end position, and what a surprise where does Jason play? The Packers have a pass-rush specialist in Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila but he’s recovering from off-season knee surgery. KGB is also a pretty big liability against the run, and played mainly in nickel defenses last season. Their other end Cullen Jenkins might be switch positions as well. The team has a glaring weakness at the defensive tackle after trading Corey Williams (7 sacks last year) to the Cleveland Browns. All of this screams out, bring this team a quality defensive end!
Mr. Taylor also has a strong familiarity with the Packers and their defensive system. The teams defensive coordinator, Bob Sanders, and defensive tackles coach Robert Nunn bother were on the Dolphins staff in the early 2000s. Sanders has continued to use that style of defense that used way back when he coached Taylor. For those that don’t know, the early 2000s were the best years of Taylor’s career. Back in 2002, he had a career high 18.5 sacks. The coaches have not hid the fact that they would love to have him aboard. “Anytime you can get a guy of that caliber, you’d want to try to get him,” said Nunn, “But I don’t get involved in anything like that.
Nunn also added, “All I know is that when I coached him, he was a great football player and a great person. I hope it works out for him because he’s had such a great career, and I’d hate to see it end on a bad note in the public’s eye. The guy is such an outstanding individual and a great football player, and I just hope for the best for Jason and hope it ends well, and he’s able to compete for a Super Bowl.”
Evenso it all comes down to General Manager Ted Thompson. Thompson doesn’t like to give up future draft picks for players, especially one like Taylor who would be a one-year rental. Last off-season Thompson wouldn’t even offer more then a 5th round pick for Randy Moss, who wanted to be a Packer. Do we really expect him to give a 2nd or 3rd rounder like the Dolphins want? Highly unlikely, but if the team really feels their defense can’t generate pressure he may be forced to make a move.
Personally, I don’t think anything will happen between the two teams. Out of all the rumors that have gone around over the weeks thou, this is the first that would make quite a bit of sense. The Packers do have a need, Dolphins can satisfy. I still want the New York Giants to make a move so they can keep rotating Justin Tuck around, but I know that’s not going to happen.
