Just about two weeks ago, we talked about the possibilities of Steve Trachsel losing his roster spot with the Baltimore Orioles. Well as of last night, its official, Steve Trachsel is no longer a Baltimore Oriole. Trachsel was designated for assignment, so the team has 10 days to trade, release or outright him to the minors. Trachsel has no trade value and won’t accept a minor league assignment so expect him to be released very soon. Looking more into the situation thou, Trachsel’s career might be over, as well.
Trachsel is in the midst of undoubtedly, the worst season of his career. The 37-year old is currently 2-5 with an 8.39 era in 10 appearances. In almost every outing this year, he’s showed that he’s got nothing left in the tank.
“He didn’t pitch good enough, bottom line,” Trembley said. “To be honest with you, I don’t think he was ever comfortable pitching out of the bullpen. We have to move on and we did. … Everybody saw the way he pitched; let that all speak for itself. I’m not going to address anything in particular. You know, we made the move, and that should be self-explanatory. Now we go onto something else.”
Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, think’s this could be it for the pitcher. In a recent Q&A in the newspaper, he brings up a conversation that he and Steve had during spring training. Supposedly, he was going to retire but only returned because he was guarantee a spot in the starting rotation.
This would lead you to believe the only way he pitches again, would be if some team offers him a rotation spot. Doubt that’s going to happen. It’s time to go enjoy the time with your family Steve, you had a productive major league career, 15 years, a good amount of them solid seasons. Only thing I won’t miss is the 3.5 hour games you caused with your extreme slowness.
