So just a few days ago, I wrote about Donovan McNabb and how the Philadelphia Eagles could already be without their star player. Lots of people took offense to this article, actually wait no, a lot of Eagles fans took offense. The consensus thought was that I was implying McNabb would be out for a while, when really at the time it was a minor injury. The point of that article thou was to ask questions about why the team was being so secretive and that the main thing was to keep an eye on this. Here we are almost one week later and McNabb is now completely shut down with a case of shoulder tendinitis. Still not a major injury, but bears watching.
Reports say that the injury happened in the weight room, pretty much a case of Donovan just overdoing it. Knowing his love for working out, a case of overdoing it would not be a surprise. If thats the case, then this is pretty simple he’ll rest up for a couple weeks and be good to go for training camp. Or is it? There was speculation that McNabb was experiencing shoulder discomfort back at the post-draft camp as well, that was about a month ago. If this injury did happen in the weight room, did it happen before that camp, and he’s just never let his shoulder rest? Or did over doing it after that camp, make his shoulder worse?
With tendinitis you want to first work on reducing inflammation, then work on strengthening the area back up. There’s only 6 weeks until training camp, and truthfully tendinitis at times could take a few weeks to dissipate pending on the level of inflammation. When it comes to working out, McNabb is famous for his annual off-season work out in Arizona. At this moment, Donovan still plans on making this trip and participating. Is this a good idea? Yes and no. McNabb cares so much about this team and being on the field you might see him pushing himself a little to early, and this could make his shoulder get even worse. For Eagles fans, I hope he takes it easy these next couple weeks and actually lets the pain fully subside before starting up.
McNabb did have a similar situation back in 2004, where the Eagles benched him on this same exact date due to shoulder tendinitis. That season he rebounded with his best season to date, and even led to the Super Bowl. So this proves, if it is just tendinitis, it isn’t a big deal.
Just remember this thou, tendinitis is a relatively minor injury but without the proper rest can quickly, very quickly become something much worse. If training camp hits and there is any pain still, you could see a cortisone shot. It’s never good for a player to receive one of those so early in a season, so lets hope it doesn’t come to that.
That’s where I’ll leave at this point, I know my Philly faithful aren’t going to be happy with this article (again). But its why I love and hate ya guys, you don’t want to hear anything negative about your team unless its coming from your own mouths. Got to bring up the questions and thoughts that go through everyone else’s minds thou.
