June 1st has come and gone, with the Philadelphia Eagles making no trades. Well, only a few days after that date the Eagles do indeed make a trade, with the Indianapolis Colts. Unfortunately for Eagles fans, the deal does not address their wide receiver situation, or Lito Sheppard. Instead this trade adds more depth to their fullback position. Who’d they acquire? Luke Lawton.
Lawton was acquired for a conditional 2009 draft pick. Profootballtalk.com reports that the compensation would be a 7th round pick if Lawton makes the team. That makes sense as Lawton has never started a game in his NFL career. Lawton bounced around on a couple practice squads, before landing an appearance with the Jets in 2005. 2007 was most likely his best season, as he appeared in 11 games for the Indianapolis Colts. His career highlight was catching a 1-yard shovel pass from Peyton Manning for a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
With Lawton being an extreme long shot to make the team, some may wonder why the Eagles even bothered making this trade. I think it makes sense thou. The team lost last years fullback Thomas Tapeh to the Minnesota Vikings and would love to have an all out battle in camp to find the best replacement. The team will now have a battle for the role with Lawton, Jason Davis, and converted defensive tackle Dan Klecko. It should be very heated as none of these players has had the chance to perform in the role yet. Even with his minimal experience, Lawton has the most out of all of them.
My guess? The player who gets the role is the player who can also help the team in other ways (i.e. special teams).
