Unfortunately, New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada is going to need surgery on his right labrum. There is good news thou. If his shoulder can hold up, that surgery will not take place till after the season. Posada made his first start today since visiting the disabled list, going 1-3 with a walk and a strikeout. When it comes to his catching abilities, which is the biggest concern, Brad Wilkerson stole one base off of him and Jose Veras.
The player and team have not released any information on what kind of labrum surgery he’ll need. The team is hoping that this shoulder strengthens up as the season progresses, which could in turn help him make better throws to second and third.
“I don’t think it’s going to be 100 percent, but it’s good enough. I think it’s good enough to get going here,” Posada said. “There’s no discomfort. Obviously something’s messed up in there. We’re going to have to get that fixed after the season.”
For the time being you could expect the Yankees to keep carrying three catchers. The extra insurance is needed in case they find out early in a game that the discomfort in his shoulder came back. The decision on Friday’s catcher will most likely come tomorrow morning based on how his shoulder field. Till he’s able to go a few days in a row, Chad Moeller will still have a job, only god knows why.
“We have to get to the point we know for sure it’s not coming back,” Girardi said. “If he gets up to three in a row, and everything’s better the fourth day, we might do something. But [it's] not an exact science.”
The Yankees have 102 more regular season games, and possibly playoff games in their future (if they get their act together). Having Jorge play a majority of those contests is an absolute must if this team is to make the playoffs. His switch-hitting bat takes pressure off all of the left-handers in the lineup, and the intensity he brings to the table is unmatched. Hopefully your shoulder holds Jorge! When I visit The Stadium in August, i want to be able to shout HIP HIP JORGE!!!!!!
