Peavy begins to throw

San Diego Padres pitcher Jake Peavy has resumed throwing a baseball around again. Although, it is not from a mound. Peavy hasn’t pitched since May 14th due to an elbow injury. Peavy was originally scheduled to begin throwing Saturday, but after some tests the doctors pushed that back a couple days. Peavy underwent an MRI on his elbow Tuesday, and was then cleared to begin playing catch. On Tuesday, Peavy even took batting practice for the first time in about a week. “I’m excited,” Peavy said.
Padres manager Bud Black has said that there is no timetable yet for Peavy to throw off a mound. They’ll most likely let him play catch a few times this week, and see how is arm reacts after each of those outings. With their being no timetable, I wouldn’t expect him to start a rehab assignment any time soon. My guess would be that he begins pitching in minor league games in mid-to-late June.
Regardless this is great news for you Padres fans. Your team sucks and well at least Peavy will give you something to cheer about once he’s back. Who knows hopefully Chase Headley will finally be playing in the outfield by the time he returns. For fantasy owners, getting Peavy back in July will be the same as doing a deadline trade. He should have plenty of extra strength for your fantasy playoff push after taking a few weeks off.
