Jack IkegwuonuThe trial date is set for Philadelphia Eagles rookie Jack Ikegwuonu, it will take place July 14th. For those who don’t remember, Ikegwuonu is the corner back from Wisconsin whose stuck plummeted big time because of his burglary arrest and torn acl injury. We first wrote about the arrest, you can find the details here. While waiting for the trial to take place, Ikegwuonu has been at the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex with the rest of the rookies learning the team’s system. Let’s take a look at both topics.

First, lets talk about the trial. The Assistant State’s attorney in charge of his case has said that official charges are a Class 1 felony, and if he is convicted that his sentence would carry a mandatory sentence minimum of 4 years and could go as high as 15. Sounds like a lot just for an X-Box but hey thats the breaks when its a residential burglary charge. I think, just like Eagles fans do, that he will not be convicted of these charges. Ikegwuonu says everything is a big misunderstanding. “I wish I could explain the whole story,” Ikegwuonu said, adding that it would take a sit-down session over coffee to hash it out. “Nothing was taken. It’s really just a big misunderstanding between friends. My brother’s friend was actually the one that initially had contacted the authorities. His efforts to rectify the situation after the fact were pretty quick. He realized what had happened. But once the state’s attorney got hold of it, she wouldn’t let it go.” Hopefully, his brothers friend confirms that it was a misunderstanding, so this kid can just concentrate on getting healthy and his professional career.

Now to his injury. The team is taking things pretty slow with Ikegwuonu as they don’t plan on using him this year. Jack’s been in the training room most of the time working on range of motion, and things that would help strengthen the muscles in his legs. He even tried to watch practice, but his knee became stiff so the trainers won’t allow him to stand on the practice field anymore. What he has been spending a lot of time doing, is studying film and the playbook. “I never expected it to be that complicated,” he said. “But it’s really intricate. They expect you to learn fast.”

So there is your update on this kid’s situation. Hope all goes well for him, as the more that comes out sounds more like it was just a childish mistake. We’ve all made them (not that particular one). If he can get out of this situation without any jail time, then you just hope that he’s learned his mistakes and moves forward.
