Dolphins rotating QBs

The Miami Dolphins have a quarterback battle on their hands, unfortunately none of them are quality starters. During the first days of OTA’s Josh McCown and John Beck have been alternating snaps with the first team. Outside of Dolphins fans, most probably don’t even know who Beck is. Well, he’s the teams 2nd round draft choice from the 2007 draft. This year’s draft choice Chad Henne has been bumped down to third team work for workouts.

Beck was the fortunate one to take the first snaps with the first unit, which leads some people to believe he has the leg up in the starter competition. McCown started the day with the second unit, but eventually the two flipped sides. “It gives them a chance to work with a specific group of receivers at one point, and then seeing that quarterback in an environment where he’s got to rise above anything else,” coach Tony Sparano said. This is actually a pretty smart way of doing this battle, as both QBs will still get work with almost all of the teams wide receivers. Should any injuries strike at the QB or WR positon, everyone will be fairly familiar with each other.

Unfortunately for Chad Henne his season will most likely begin as the teams inactive emergency quarter back. He was stuck with the third team all day long, and it looks like he’ll be staying in that role for the time being.

When it comes to the starting job thou I wouldn’t be excited if I were a Dolphins fan. Both QBs have some starting experience. Out of the two the best season goes to McCown way back in 2004, with the Arizona Cardinals. He played in 14 games that season, throwing over 400 passes for about 180 yards a game. Beck as a rookie last year played 5 games, throwing 107 passes for 111.8 yards a game, with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. It definitely looks like the two will just be holding the spot warm for when Henne is ready to take over the starting job.
