Media a pawn in Strahans game?

May 14, 2008

Michael StrahanNew York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan loves talking with the media, and at the same time loves playing games with it. Ever since the clock hit 0:00 at the Super Bowl, the question has been, Will Michael Strahan retire? The one man who knows has made his decision people. Michael Strahan knows what he wants, so what’s the answer?

No one knows and no one will know. Here he goes playing games with the media and Giants fans hearts once again. Strahan has made up his mind, but has decided to keep it a secret. He presented an award tonight at the Dreams in the City fundraiser for the Diabetes Research Institute and did grant interviews while there.

At the fundraiser he said, “I’ll be honest with you, I pretty much know what I’m going to do right now. But you know what the thing is? If I say it, I can’t change my mind. So I would rather wait until I know I’m 100 percent sure that when I say what I’m going to do, I’m going to do it. Because if I say I’m retired, then I’m not going to come back the next day. If I’ve graduated from football, I won’t come back the same day in the Masters’ program. And if I say I’m going to play again then I know I’m committed to playing. So I know what I want to do. I just want to make sure that its 100 percent what I want to do, because either way it’s a heck of a commitment.”

Strahan’s teammates haven’t stopped speculating about his future. Over the past 10 days, two of his closest friends on the teams Antonio Pierce and Osi Umenyiora have both said they expect the defensive end to hang up his cleats. He was even asked at the fundraiser about his teammates opinions. “I think a lot of them want me to retire because they’re always on the radio talking about it. They’re getting more radio and TV time than I get all of a sudden. No, you know, I think the guys want me to come back. I think we had a great time together. Osi called me out of the blue two days ago and said ‘Do you remember 2005? We had so much fun. It was slightly more fun than last year. I think we can do it again. He’s trying to drop these subtle hints. I was like, ‘Well, we probably could, but I don’t know Osi.’ But there are times I want to and times that I don’t.”

Radio and TV time by just talking about his future, he’s loving every minute of that. Whether its by his teammates or himself, his name is in the news and thats what he loves. This guy will definitely be an entertaining analysts once he does retire.

The only good thing out of all of this, which I don’t know if we should believe, it’s not about the money! Many have speculated that he’ll only return if its a big pay day, like an insane amount of money more then the $4 million he earned last season. His response to the money, “Yeah, but it’s not that. Really, you know, money is great. Trust me. Nobody wants to work for free. But at the same time, I can make money doing other stuff that means when I wake up on Sunday I’m not sore, and I can have more time to enjoy life and be with my family. There are a lot of other ways to do other things and make money, but that’s not the sole purpose of life.” Something I like to hear, but after his recent divorce battle I DOUBT IT!

My opinion, he returns and attempts to get a second championship. Any inside reasoning, nope. Just being a Giants fan and knowing this guys ego, and the love he still shows for this game. Going for another title is just something he couldn’t pass up.

Thanks go out to the NY Daily News for the quotes.
