Another May return for a popular Yankee?
May 9, 2008

It’s now the month of May, the New York Yankees are struggling (although not as bad as last year), so does that mean a blast from the past be returning for another stint? It was the month of May last year, when Roger Clemens showed up at Yankees stadium and announced to a sold out crowd that he was putting the pinstripes back on. We all saw how “good” that worked out for the team. Could Hank Steinbrenner be considering a similar move this year? Don’t worry it won’t be Clemens again. So who could it be?
None other then David “Boomer” Wells. Wells told the New York Post today that he could help the struggling Yankees rotation. Wells also made a similar comment while appearing on the “Best Damn Sports Show Period”. Could this really be a possibility, or Wells just shooting off at the mouth again? Almost every year he says he wants to come back to New York.
Well Steinbrenner isn’t doing anything to down play the start of the rumor. “I’ve thought about it,” Steinbrenner told The Post. “I saw him on TV, and I did think about it when I was watching.” The good thing for Yankees fan, the topic has not come up yet in internal meetings. Now thou, I’m sure it will. “You never know,” Steinbrenner said. “[Wells] hasn’t come up in conversation, but I’ve had so much other [bleep] to deal with lately.”
The Yankees are currently mixing and matching parts with the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation, much like early last year. Currently, the spots are occupied by Darrell Rasner and umm Kei Igawa. Philip Hughes won’t even be a thought for this staff till August probably, they’ll want him to get quite a few minor league starts before coming back. Personally, I feel Ian Kennedy will be back up with the team by mid-June. If his first minor league start was an indicator, and he keeps that level of performance up they’ll have no choice but to give him another chance. And that chance would go a long way to showing if he’s a major league pitcher or an AAAA-pitcher.
The Yankees do have other minor league options they could try, or even other players they could try to trade for. I think going down the David Wells road again won’t be the best choice. Wells claims to be in good physical choice, but would just need a few weeks to get his arm into game shape. He now has Type-2 diabetes, so he’s slimmed down to 245 pounds, but just like the other guys he can’t go deep in to games anymore.
I love Boomer and the things he did for the Bronx Bombers, but it’s time for this team to continue the move towards the future. Brian Cashman has a good thing going here with the youth movement, even if it’s not paying immediate dividends. Look at our record its 18-18, we’re playing .500 baseball not bad considering the struggles of the pitching staff, injuries, and the horrendous hitting. But look at where we were last year after 50 games, 21-29. I’d say this year has been a major improvement compared to that. Do we need to make a move? Yea it looks like it, but Boomer is not that move.
