When Posada returns is Giambi out?

It’s definitely a possibility. Jon Heyman of cnnsi.com speculates (pure speculation), that when New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada returns, 1B Jason Giambi would become a candidate for release. There would obviously be a few things that have to happen for this to take place thou.

First and foremost, Posada would have to be physically unable to catch. If Posada’s shoulder won’t let him go, the Yankees would be forced to play Jorge at first base. DH’n wouldn’t be possible because that would mean removing Johnny Damon or Hideki Matsui from the lineup. Both of which have been key ingredients in keeping the Yankees afloat during their slow start. If Jason Giambi somehow miraculously regains his form from a couple years ago, then all that can change to. (Highly unlikely thou).

Another thing that would need to take place, is the Yankees swallowing Giambi’s contract. Even with him being in the final year that would be a big chunk of change and also a big slap to the ego of the owners. Who better to absorb that financial hit thou, then the Yankees? It’s no longer unprecedented for a huge contract number to just be outright released. The Toronto Blue Jays have opened up the door for this after recently letting Frank Thomas walk. And you know what if the Yankees can pay Carl Pavano all that money to do nothing, let’s just do that with Jason too. If Jorge can’t go I’d rather have him in the lineup.

A big plus out of this would be the Yankees could re-call Alberto Gonzalez to the major league roster. He was recently demoted when Wilson Betemit came off the disabled list. Betemit is a nice piece but definitely not as good as Gonzalez in the field.

Granted this is all speculation like I said earlier. Best case scenario is of course Jorge Posada being able to catch 5 or 6 days a week again. He’d also be a much happier player being able to do that instead. I’d love to get rid of Jason as much as the next Yankees fan, but having Jorge at first base isn’t the ideal scenario either.
