No more of these Human Rain Delays

May 31, 2008

Steve TrachselIt looks like the days of the human rain delay are finally coming to an end. No I’m not talking about Major League Baseballs enforcement of the pace of game rules (hate to say it but I do agree with their position, but thats another story). I’m talking about Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Trachsel. Taking Steve out of the bigs, may lower MLB Game Time averages by 2 minutes all by himself. Due to consist struggles this year, actually not struggles just complete flat out horrible pitching, his next start is in doubt. He was already skipped in the rotation once, so his roster spot most likely will be in doubt now. Read more

Denver going long with AI

May 30, 2008

Allen IversonIt’s starting to sound like the Denver Nuggets are willing to go long-term with Allen Iverson. Iverson has an opt-clause in his current deal, and he has till June 20th to exercise it. Iverson is scheduled to earn $20.84 million next season, so what would make AI opt out?

“We want to finish our career in Denver, but we have no decision on (whether Iverson will opt out),” said Iverson’s Personal Manager Gary Moore.

Surprising to hear someone close to Iverson say this, but if he truly does want to end his career in the Mile High city then opting out would be a good decision. The real question thou is this, Will Iverson be willing to forfeit some short term money, for long term security? That’s right, forfeit some money. The Nuggets are currently going to be paying big money in luxury tax next year, and if they could rework Iverson’s deal they could save themselves BIG money! Something like this is no longer out of the question in the NBA thou, Vince Carter did something similar to this last year with the New Jersey Nets.

After the season’s end, Moore said that he and Iverson would considering opt-ing out of the current deal, and possibly signing something like a 3-year contract. Nuggets VP of Basketball Operations, Mark Warkentien has admitted to having discussions with Moore, but would not elaborate. Moore just says, “They have gone quite well”.

I personally think this. If Iverson signs a long-term deal with the Nuggest, then the writing is on the wall for Carmelo Anthony. The door would be open and the team would be entertaining any and all trade offers. It’s obvious the team could win games with the combination of AI and Anthony, but only in the regular season. For a team to win in the playoffs, it needs chemistry and that is something these two just don’t have. Iverson was brought in to also help Melo get to the next level, that has not happened. If anything Melo has digressed in both attitude and defensively.

In addition, it’s been rumored the team has already been shopping Melo. So if they’ve been shopping Melo and talking long term with AI, does that mean they fully believe Iverson is their answer? (yes, pun intended).

Tampa comings and goings

May 30, 2008

Jeff GarciaThe Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a few minor roster moves today, neither of which should come as any huge surprise. The team re-signed tight end Jerramy Stevens and decided to let Bruce Gradkowski try and find a quarterback job elsewhere. Each move represents something completely different thou, at the QB position the team is very over loaded and it was known they needed to clean out some guys. While, at the tight end position, some may of thought the team was set with the current group but this signing of Stevens may cast some doubt on the cast. Let’s take a look at both. Read more

No Morrow in rotation after all

May 28, 2008

Brandon MorrowIt looks like the Seattle Mariners are going to leave relief pitcher Brandon Morrow in the bullpen. There’s been speculation the past few days, that the team was going to begin the process of stretching him into a starter. Morrow and manager John McLaren spoke today and it looks like the change will have to wait till next year. “He didn’t think it was going to be a good idea to do it during the season,” Morrow said. Part of the decision came down to Morrow’s own success as a reliever. Read more

Whose Youboty staying in Buffalo

May 28, 2008

Ashton YoubotyFor the moment, the Cleveland Browns won’t be acquiring Ashton Youboty from the Buffalo Bills. It’s no secret that the Browns need corner back depth, but as you can tell by this they are setting the bar low. Looking more for positional depth (Youboty), then outstanding starter (Lito Sheppard). So, right now, the Bills aren’t considering trading Youboty, but that could change as the team has quite a bit of depth in the secondary. Read more

Percival back on the shelf

May 28, 2008

Troy PercivalDuring today’s game Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Troy Percival fell on the mound while throwing a pitch. He officially left the game because of tightness in his hamstring, thou the official type of injury hasn’t been announced yet. The pitcher will undergo an MRI and then be re-evaluated by team doctors on Thursday. This could be worrisome for Rays fans, as Percival was already experiencing tightness in the hamstring last week, so he possibly could of made the injury worse in the fall. The ironic part of all this? Ken Rosenthal had just put out an article today saying bullpen health is key for the Rays, especially with Percival. Read more
