New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada is heading for the disabled list due to his ailing shoulder. Posada started yesterday at catcher, but was a late scratch today after having the pain come back. The team finally has an idea thou what is wrong with his shoulder, its been officially diagnosis as a tear in the subscapularis muscle.
Posada will be heading to Alabama to meet with Dr James Andrews regarding the injury. Andrews has already viewed the MRI, and has told Posada that surgery should not be needed. But with the problem occurring again, there is a chance that surgery may be needed, hence the visit to Dr Andrews.
In the meantime, Jose Molina will continue to handle the starting catcher duties. The Yankees are severely hurting at the back-up position thou as they recently designated Chad Moeller for assignment. Moeller can not be recalled to the major league squad till he clears waivers, if he clears. The Yankees will most likely call up no name Chris Stewart while waiting for Moeller.
Upon returning from the injury, the Yankees have a major decision on their hands. Where does Jorge play? He could catch, and he has said all along he plans on catching throughout his entire 4-year contract. He’ll definitely spend a decent amount of time at the DH position, but then that would mean less at bats for Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon. So another option, would be to split time at first base as well with Jason Giambi. Posada wants to catch, but at this point in his career with injuries now taking their toll, he’s got to consider other options.
One other question, will the Yankees now consider bringing in Mike Piazza as the back-up?
