Eli knows team must improve

New York Giants QB Eli Manning knows he, as well as his team, must improve if the team wants to get back to the Super Bowl. Wow pretty smart of him to realize that, I thought that would be blatantly obvious. “You can’t look at just the last four games and say, ‘This is who we are,’ ” Manning said Friday after a workout at Giants Stadium. “You got to look at the whole season. Last year, if you look at some of the games, we were almost fortunate to make it into the playoffs in the first place. We got a lot to improve on.”

Manning himself is looking to mainly improve his deep ball. “I’d like to add 10 more yards to my throw, to my deep ball,” Manning said. According to the NY Post, Manning wasn’t happy with the teams down field passing game last season and really wants them to work on improving that. I don’t know, but I think most Giants fans will tell you this team does matter when they forget that part of the game. In past years, the coaching staff got to happy with calling deep passes and it forced a lot of short drives. So how is Eli looking to improve this? During his off-season workouts he is focusing on leg strength. Much like a pitcher in baseball, Eli knows this is where the strength for his throws starts and he needs that part of his body to be as strong as it could be. Strengthening the legs, should also help Eli stay healthier, not like he’s missed much time in his career.

He also wants to improve to the point where’s he consistent for all 16 games, and all 4 post-season contests. Eli did have an amazing run in the playoffs and some now think he’s joined the group of QBs who could be considered “complete” QBs. He doesn’t feel like that time has officially come yet. “It’s satisfying, but I still work extremely hard in what I’m doing. I’m not content with where I am in my play,” Manning said. “I played well through the playoff run, but I’d like to do that over 16 regular-season games and into the playoffs rather than wait until the last four.”

As a Giants fan, I love how seriously the team is taking the off-season. Eli hasn’t been the only Giant player talking about improvement and we need to get bothered, other players have also come to the media stressing that since workouts began. Even newcomer, safety Sammy Knight has said this team is focused on another ring. This is one of the youngest teams in the NFL and has to step up their game even more to compete with other teams in the NFC that have also gotten better. With a lot of tough contests on the schedule this year, it will be a dogfight all year long, so keeping this attitude that they haven’t one anything is how they have to go about it.

Eli said it best, “We got to keep the same attitude we had last year, we don’t have to talk about repeating. That doesn’t have to be part of our discussion. Our discussion is to get better. Last year was a great season, it was fun, but it’s over.”
