Updating the shoulder injuries
April 29, 2008
Updates are in today for pitcher John Smoltz and catcher Jorge Posada. At the moment, both injuries don’t sound to severe, which is good news for both players, teams, and the fans of them. Lets look at the updates.
Atlanta Braves P John Smoltz: He was placed on the disabled list today, no surprise there. The good news is that he has been diagnosed with a severely inflamed biceps tendon and inflammation in his rotator cuff. Well thats not really good news, but its better then the possible alternatives. Smoltz was diagnosed by the best in the biz, Dr. James Andrews and his prescription? Rest and rehab until he is completely pain free. The bad news? That could mean an indefinite stay on the DL, there’s currently no timetable on his return. It will all depend on how the now 40 year old, Smoltz’s body can respond to the time off and exercises. Tom Glavine was activated from the DL today, and will replace Smoltz in the rotation.
New York Yankees C Jorge Posada: Well he was put on the DL over the weekend, his return is also undetermined. The only update coming out from the Yankees, continued to raise concern in my eyes. ESPN is reporting that the injury is not season-ending, which is good. Posada met with Dr. Andrews as well, BUT he’s going for another opinion. The results of his examination were being sent to the Cincinnati Reds team physician, Dr. Timothy Kremchek. “He had a good meeting with Andrews. The films are being sent to Kremchek and so we’ll wait for that and we’ll go from there,” manager Joe Girardi said.
Girardi, himself is currently optimistic the injury will not be season ending, and is just that a strained shoulder. Posada is staying away from any guessing, an obvious sign he’s in pain and doesn’t know what to believe. “Till all the doctors weigh in, I’m not going to guess and speculate. When they give me concrete information I’ll be sure to share it,” Posada said through club spokesman Jason Zillo. The results from Kremchek’s examination will take a few days.
Posada could still be out anywhere from 2 week to the entire season. For just rest and rehab, it could take around 2 weeks. If there happens to be surgery, he could easily be out 4-6 weeks, or possibly the season. Will Carroll of Baseball Prospect, an injury expert, suspects rest and rehab itself thou could take up to 30 days for this injury. If it’s 4 weeks or more the Yankees and Brian Cashman would need to look for catching assistance. SO, who is out there? Possibilities include, Mike DiFelice, Sal Fasano, Mike Piazza, Doug Mirabelli and Damian Miller. No great options, but could easily be serviceable if Posada is out in the 4-6 week period. The Yankees currently, have no minor leaguers that could fill the void, as all prospects are in A ball.
Smoltz cant shoulder the load
April 27, 2008
Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz is experiencing soreness in his shoulder again. Smoltz left today’s game after the 4th inning, which he gave up 4 runs in, and complained about discomfort in his throwing shoulder. He’s already missed his first start of the season because of this. He said this discomfort prevented him from throwing his pitches the way he would normally like. Will this cause his 2nd stint on the disabled list this year?
Right now, Smoltz and the Braves aren’t sure where this soreness will lead. “The next couple of days I should know what paths we’re looking at,” he said. Could Smoltz’s body be catching up to his age? John is just a few weeks away from his 41st birthday, and it could be just old age now. Smoltz came in to the game with a 3-1 record and a 0.78 era in 4 starts, striking out 31 in 23 innings pitched. It’s a very impressive start for a pitcher of his age, let alone any pitcher. “He’s been dominating all season,” manager Bobby Cox said. “This is the only time he didn’t dominate.”
If a stint on the DL is needed, you would probably see Chuck James called up to take his spot in the rotation.
Eagles Ikegwuonu plea deal, NULL AND VOID!
April 27, 2008
Newly drafted CB Jack Ikegwuonu will now face charges due to a stolen X-Box. The Philadelphia Eagles must be thrilled about this. He originally agreed to a plea deal before the draft to avoid the NFL Personal Conduct Policy. The problem? WKOW-TV in Wisconsin is reporting that his brother refused to accept the same deal. So that means Jack’s deal is now NULL AND VOID!
Ikegwunou is now due in an Illinois court room on July 10th. He’s facing one felony count, which could possibly disrupt his NFL career. In addition, he’s now likely to face penalties under the Personal Conduct Policy. He did all that he could to get a deal arranged before draft day, and now thanks to his brother he’s subject to the policy. Just goes to show your past, can always effect your future.
This might wind up a great 4th round pick for the Philadelphia Eagles. (sarcasm people, sarcasm)
Tear sidelines Jorge
April 27, 2008
New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada is heading for the disabled list due to his ailing shoulder. Posada started yesterday at catcher, but was a late scratch today after having the pain come back. The team finally has an idea thou what is wrong with his shoulder, its been officially diagnosis as a tear in the subscapularis muscle.
Posada will be heading to Alabama to meet with Dr James Andrews regarding the injury. Andrews has already viewed the MRI, and has told Posada that surgery should not be needed. But with the problem occurring again, there is a chance that surgery may be needed, hence the visit to Dr Andrews.
In the meantime, Jose Molina will continue to handle the starting catcher duties. The Yankees are severely hurting at the back-up position thou as they recently designated Chad Moeller for assignment. Moeller can not be recalled to the major league squad till he clears waivers, if he clears. The Yankees will most likely call up no name Chris Stewart while waiting for Moeller.
Upon returning from the injury, the Yankees have a major decision on their hands. Where does Jorge play? He could catch, and he has said all along he plans on catching throughout his entire 4-year contract. He’ll definitely spend a decent amount of time at the DH position, but then that would mean less at bats for Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon. So another option, would be to split time at first base as well with Jason Giambi. Posada wants to catch, but at this point in his career with injuries now taking their toll, he’s got to consider other options.
One other question, will the Yankees now consider bringing in Mike Piazza as the back-up?
Is Seau in the Pats plans?
April 27, 2008
With the New England Patriots selecting Jerod Mayo with the 10th pick in the NFL Draft, do the New England Patriots still have plans for Junior Seau? During the playoffs, it was obvious that the Pats needed to get younger at the linebacker position, which is the reason they selected Mayo, a University of Tennessee product. We all know thou, that coach Bill Belichick usually doesn’t bring in or play those young linebackers. So where does Seau stand?
Junior Seau and Patriots management have had discussions since the season ended, but at this moment there is no contract in place for him to play the 2008 season. He’s expected to visit the Foxboro area soon for a physical but yet still isn’t completely convinced he will have a role. When asked about the drafting of Mayo, he responded, “It’s all good”, then took to the sea to go surfing. Could that be, Seau going off into the sunset and leaving football behind? Nah, not a chance, if the 39-year old has any say he won’t be retiring.
Jared Mayo is pretty convinced he can step in and contribute to this team, today. “If I come in and do become a starter and I want to make a contribution there, that’s a way to go,” he said. “Any part of the game, any aspect of the game that the coaches want me to play, I feel like I can succeed in.” He’s willing to do anything to help the team succeed, even if it includes a top 10 pick, playing special teams, which I think speaks a lot about this guys character. “you can make a contribution on special teams.”
Ideally, I think the Patriots should bring Seau back for one more season, if anything for a teacher role. With the coaching staff in place and Junior Seau in the fold, Mayo would be able to learn from some of the greatest defensive minds in football today. In an interview yesterday, Mayo even said the person he is most anxious to meet is Seau. If Junior can re-join the team, and keep his ego in check, then it could be a good situation for all parties.
Here’s an article from SouthCoastToday.com about Jerod Mayo and the Patriots draft.
Rollins on the mend
April 27, 2008
Philadelphia Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins is getting much closer to 100 percent and should be able to begin his rehab assignment soon. Rollins, currently on the disabled list, with a sprained ankle took batting AND fielding practice yesterday in Clearwater, Florida. Rollins told the Philadelphia Inquirer he was much improved.
There is no official date for a rehab assignment but he is able to come of the DL on May 5th when the team visits the Arizona Diamondbacks. My guess would probably be Wednesday or Thursday, and play through the weekend for one of the minor league affiliates.
Other Phillies injury notes. Chris Snelling, also on the DL, with knee inflammation had an MRI yesterday. He’ll remain in Philadelphia and receive care from trainer Scott Sheridan during the home stand. Scott Mathieson, ulnar nerve transposition, will visit DR James Andrews in Alabama for a third opinion on his ailing right elbow.
