The New York Giants may have a few players may skip the “voluntary” off-season workout programs, one of which who may hold out from training camp as well. These players included Pro-Bowl defensive ends Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora, as well as offensive lineman Chris Snee. The interesting part about this is they all have the same agent, Tony Agnone. The first two, Strahan and Osi are of no surprise, their disappearance from workouts and camp was expected. Snee comes as a surprise thou, being Tom Coughlin’s son-in-law.
Osi recently signed a new contract with the Giants back in 2005, but changed his agent this past year to Agnone. Normally, when a player changes agents it means they want a new contract. Osi considered holding out from training camp himself last year, but because of Strahan’s “retirement” decision he went to camp. But now that the Giants have their Super Bowl trophy and his back-up Justin Tuck his making just over $6 million a year. Osi is only due to make $1.7 million. The problem for Osi, is the length of the contract, he still has FIVE years left on his deal, which leaves him minimal leverage.
Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News says, “A lot of people who know him are absolutely convinced he’s going to holdout from training camp this summer if he doesn’t get a new contract. In fact, someone who talked to him recently told me ‘I guarantee you he’s not coming to camp.’” If he does hold out he’ll accruing severe fines and missing any regular seasons game well would cost him game checks and most likely part of his initial bonus money. So Giants faithful DON’T PANIC! We’ll have our boy back by the season opener against the Washington Redskins.
Now Chris Snee, this was totally unexpected to me. It’s known he’s one of the best young guards in the NFL today but I truly did not expect him to look for a new deal already. He’s currently in the final season of his rookie contract, I guess he really just wants to get the extension done now and not even hit free agency. His family is definitely not lacking for money, I’m sure if he needs it father-in-law Coughlin can loan him a few bucks.
Snee is expected to skip the “voluntary” sessions but yet will show up for training camp, that is a good thing. I don’t know how deep we should look into this situation with Snee thou as he has been working out at the team’s facilities the last couple weeks. If he’s already been there working out he obviously wants to be with the team, this may just be a hey guys, wake up its time to pay me I mean a lot.
And now Strahan, well we know he’s missing workouts and holding out camp. We won’t see him till he has a new deal. Early word is that the new deal may even allow him to come to camp late.
