Mets roster moves

The New York Mets made a couple roster moves today, the surprising one is the placing of 2B Ruben Gotay on waivers. Gotay just recently rejoined the lineup after suffering a sprained ankle during camp. Unfortunately for him, Fernando Tatis has the front offices support for the final role on the bench. This morning it actually looked like the Mets may place Gotay on the disabled list just to keep him on the roster. Reason being, he’s out of options and would have to clear waivers to be sent to AAA. I’m sure there are quite a few teams who would love to have Gotay as their 5th outfielder.
Well come afternoon, Gotay was informed that he had been placed on waivers. If he clears waivers, the Mets can then attempt to resign him to a minor league deal. Did all of this cause friction between the Mets and Gotay? You bet your ass it did. Gotay is not happy at all about the situation. “I thought I did a good job last year,” Gotay said. “I didn’t think I deserved this.” According to Newsday, Gotay sat in his locker talking on the phone with tears in his eyes after packing up. I don’t expect to see him back with the Mets for a while, he’ll be looking elsewhere.
The other move involved Rule 5 draft pick, Steven Register. The Mets liked the kid, they just don’t have the room on their major league roster for him right now which meant off to the waiver wire he goes. Being a Rule 5 guy, if he clears waivers the Mets have to offer him back to the Colorado Rockies. If the Rockies want him back, they’ll send $25,000 to Mets. Apparently, the Mets want to keep the kid and will now talk trade with Colorado.
