Texans no more likely to trade Sage

Speculation has been rampant since the Houston Texans signed Quinn Gray, that back-up QB Sage Rosenfels would soon be traded. There have been trade rumors all off-season regarding Sage, including the Texans turning down a 3rd round draft pick from the Minnesota Vikings. If you talk to Texans’ coach Gary Kubiak about trade possibilities he’d want to make you believe differently. “I know what people are saying, but signing Quinn has absolutely nothing to do with it,” Kubiak said “I’ve been a two-quarterback type of guy, but what happened to us last season scared the heck out of me, and I don’t want to go through that again.”

Last season, the Texans played a bunch of bums in their 3rd QB slot, like most teams do. With Gray slated into the third slot, the team actually has a player with some experience that could in an emergency be somewhat reliable. Not many teams in the NFL can expect anything out of their emergency QB. The Texans have to be worried as last year Matt Schaub did miss 5 games, and split time in 5 others with Rosenfels. In those 5 games that Schaub missed, the Texans Shane Boyd as the backup QB. Who the hell is Shane Boyd? “I don’t know what we would have done if something had happened to Sage,” Kubiak said. “I don’t want to go through that again. I think my philosophy has changed. I’ve become more of a three-quarterback guy.

Personally, I think the signing of Gray is a good one for the Texans. He came VERY cheap, only a $40,000 signing bonus, and if the team decides to keep Sage, they could literally cut Gray and get almost no cap hit. Or they keep him and have 3 quaterbacks, all with some experience. Another possibility is another teams QB goes down during training camp. The Texans would have a surplus of players and could then look to trade Rosenfels or Gray and still not be short themselves. There’s lots of possibilities for the Texans, and the way Kubiak is handling it right now is correct, lets wait and see, we are in no rush. And who can blame them, their starter is Matt Schaub.
