Favre not quite retired

Former Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre is not quite retired yet. It appears the future hall of famer has not filed his retirement paperwork with the NFL yet. This would mean he’s still a Packer and preventing the team from moving forward. How could he be doing that? Well till he retires, he still counts for $11.4 million against this years salary cap. Could it be Favre is still reconsidering? I highly doubt it, he looked like a man that was truly through with the game during that press conference.

The Packers are surprisingly aren’t to concerned about Favre filling out the paperwork. The team already has about $21 million in cap space and with no marquee free agents left the team will not be in danger of going over. Even if they did sign a few players they’d easily have enough money to pay all their draft picks. When Favre’s money does come off the book, the team would have around $30-35 million and leap past the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the most cap space. “We don’t need the cap room,” GM Ted Thompson said of the delay.

Under Thompson this team has done a good job in keeping their salary cap in check. The team doesn’t overspend for players and doesn’t sign players they don’t need. Over the next 2 years there will be a considerable amount of players available for extensions and you could possibly see them, re-signing a couple before the year is out just to have it hit against this huge space, since not all of it carries over to next year.

I’m sure some Packer fans are reading this and thinking the team hasn’t done much then to move forward. I disagree. With what was available in this years free agent market, the Packers did the right thing by standing pat. There was never a big name QB on the market who could of replaced Favre and most of the big name defensive players were grossly overpaid. And over paying is just something Thompson won’t do.
