Things are definitely getting pretty ugly between the Detroit Tigers and Brandon Inge. On Sunday afternoon, the team had Inge start as catcher, with the idea being if Vance Wilson is not ready to go he will help back-up Pudge Rodriguez. After the game Inge ripped into the decision to have him catch. “Catching absolutely 100 percent reinforces that third base is my all-time love,” Inge said. “That’s not even a question.” Leyland’s response to all the comments was “I still hope we trade him, I think that’s best for him. “It is not best for us.”
Jim Leyland really wants Inge on this team. He’s mentioned how Inge is swinging the bat “as well as I’ve ever seen him.” But Monday he did start to give in on Inge, most likely in an attempt to keep his best hitting bench player happy. “Brandon Inge does not want to be a catcher,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said yesterday. “Will he do it for us? Yes, but he does not want to be a catcher. I’m not going to force somebody to catch.” On the possibility of a trade “I want him to play third base somewhere everyday. Is that going to happen? I have no clue.”
If this situation carries on much longer it could really start to damage the clubhouse. Inge has been pretty much politically correct in how he talks to the media but I’m SURE there is tension in that clubhouse, there just has to be. This team has a chance to be something very special this year and they don’t need any distractions. Where could he go? I’m not sure but it is looking like the Tigers aren’t going to just give him away for nothing.
