Unlike the Cleveland Browns who keep signing talent, the New York Jets are just throwing money away this off-season. To start the Jets signed Kris Jenkins to a $30 million 5 year deal with $9.5 million guaranteed. Then today they made a few signings. The first is LB Calvin Pace from the Arizona Cardinals at a price tag of 6-year $42 million with a whopping $22 million guaranteed. The other big signing was right tackle Damien Woody from the Detroit Lions for $25.5 million over 5 years and a $11 million in guarantees. So lets do the math $42.5 million in guaranteed money to three players. Now let me tell you why what they are doing is literally throwing away money.
- First, both offensive tackles have had serious weight problems in their careers. Kris Jenkins contract calls for him to be weighed up to 10 times during the season, where he gets paid $25,000 a weigh-in if he is at a specified weight. The fat boy is being paid extra just to keep in shape!!!! Woody has also had weight problems throughout his career and is also coming off shoulder surgery.
- Second, the team has been paying way much more money then any other team in the NFL has been offering. The Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals were both interested in Pace but neither would have gave Pace anywhere near the money the Jets gave him. Woody is an upgrade over Anthony Clement but its also highly unlikely that any team would have given him that kind of money.
- One hit wonders? Is Pace the real deal? He’s had one good season in his NFL Career and the Jets payed him like a perennial pro-bowler. He’s now one of the highest paid LB’s in the history of football. (how many times have we said that already about players). He’s only got 14 sacks in 67 career games, with 6.5 coming last season. Now last year he did play in a 3-4 for defense for the first time in his career which he will be playing in under Eric Mangini.
Now I say these deals are throwing away money, but at the same time they can look like huge deals. Pace could wind up being a super star in that defense. Jenkins and Woody could both lose weight and rebound and have two great seasons. All could be. But yet all paid like they do it consistently. We’ll see what happens but right now I say the Jets are throwing away money that could be used for much more players to build a team with.
