The Cleveland Browns have had a busy day with former Green Bay Packers defensive end Corey Williams. Shortly after the midnight start time for free agency, the Browns and Packers reached a deal that sent Williams to Cleveland, and the Pack received a 2nd round draft pick. The deal was contingent on the Browns reaching a contract extension with Williams.
This afternoon that extension has happened. Corey Williams will receive $38 million over 6-years. The deal calls for Williams to get $16.3 million of it guaranteed. Not a bad deal for the Browns considering how high the bar was set with Tommy Kelly and the Oakland Raiders. The deal is almost $7 million less in guarantees.
Plus and minuses on this deal. The Packers get a 2nd round pick for someone they did not want to give a long-term extension too. The Pack was smart in the fact they did franchise tag him, where they would of got something in return if he did find a long-term deal elsewhere. They’ll have to replace his presence now, thou they do have quite a bit of depth on the line, so overall I’d say its a plus for them.
For the Browns there are plus and minuses. The plus far outweighs thou. Williams is a premier defensive lineman and should have a big impact at the left end spot in Cleveland. The only negative for the Browns is that they have no picks in either the first or second round in this years draft. With the $37 million in cap space they started free agency with I’d assume they will just look to make signings cause barring any trades there won’t be any marquee pick for them in this year’s draft.
