Oakland Athletics third baseman Eric Chavez is already experiencing back problems and we are just days in to camp. Chavez has had problems on and off for a couple years now, its kept him out of the lineup and hampered his production when he is in it. He has a surgically repaired back and has been complaining of increased stiffness since workouts began. To offset this he was given an epidural shot this morning. He’s going to be shut down completely for 4 to 5 days to let his body rest and the shot to do its job. The shot is designed to reduce inflammation.
If all goes well, Chavez should be able to start playing games by the middle of March. While this doesn’t put his regular season status into jeopardy it doesn’t bode well for his future. If his back is already acting up you can be sure that once the heat starts kicking in july and august he’ll be in pain again.
