Details of Bartolo Colon contract

The Boston Herald released details of the minor league contract that Bartolo Colon recently signed with the Boston Red Sox. The deal calls for Colon to make $18,000 / month while at AAA Pawtucket. If he makes the major league team he will earn a guaranteed base salary of $1.25 million. If he can make 30 starts the deal could earn him almost $5.75 million in incentives, big IF considering his injury history.
I hate to say this, but it is not a bad signing for the Red Sox in all but one way, ill get to that later in this post. The good for the BoSox it gives them insurance should Curt Schilling never come back this season. The Red Sox are going with a lot of question marks in their rotation early on. Yea yea, i know Jon Lester has done well, i know Clay Buchholz threw a no-hitter and yes they still do have Tim Wakefield.
But lets be realistic Red Sox Nation, Buchholz threw a no-hitter but WILL struggle, he’s young and will be in his first full season, he WILL hit bumps in the road. Lester is a great feel good story but is he really ever a #3 or higher in the rotation, it remains to be seen. Wake i do like he’s inconsistent due to the knuckleball but when that pitch is on, he’s almost unhittable. Colon is a pretty solid low risk, high reward player for this team.
Now to the one bad thing about this signing. He is ATROCIOUS against the New York Yankees and Alex Rodriguez in particular. Last season 1 start, 2 innings , 7 earned runs. 2006 – 1 start, 2 innings, 7 earned runs. 2005 – 2 starts 10 innings 10 earned runs, 7 homeruns. Notice a pattern? I bet you can guarantee if he does make the majors he’ll never face the Bronx Bombers.
