David Wells and the Cardinals?

Gregg Clifton, the agent for pitcher David Wells recently reached out to the St. Louis Cardinals about a 1-year contract for his client. On paper, it would make sense why his agent did this, the Cardinals have a very unsettled rotation and a lot of question marks. The problem is thou his client Wells, is 44, and coming off a horrendous season. Maybe the worst of his career. Check that, WAS the worst of his career. Wells split his season between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. With the Padres he started 22 games, went 5-8 with a 5.54 era, in LA he started 7 games going 4-1 but with a 5.12 era.

So what are the Cardinals options if they’re telling Mr. Wells, no thank you? The team has a trio of young starters who they’d like to give a long look at in spring training. Those include Anthony Reyes, Todd Wellemeyer and Brad Thompson. All 3 had ok seasons last year, nothing stellar but comparable to the rest of the league at the back end of a rotation. The team believes no current free agent can offer a significant upgrade over these guys. When it comes to David Wells, I wholeheartedly agree!

If these 3 falter in camp, I’m sure the Cards hit the free agent pool and when they do there HAS to be better options then David Wells.
