Ok what is going on with the Chicago Bears? Supposedly, the Bears are about to give Kyle Orton a one-year extension through 2009 Thats fine, but the ironic part is the deal is comparable to the one they JUST gave Rex Grossman. The deal Grossman got was 1-yr $3 million including incentives that could reach $2 million. So now they’re giving Orton the same deal??? HUH??!?!?!?!
Yesterday I did say Grossman would get a solid chance at the starting job but now I’m not so sure. Orton has had better success as a starter going 12-6 over the past 3 years, including winning the last 2 games of the 2007 season. I’d have to say right now Orton goes into camp as the starter but with Rex nipping at his heels.
This extension is very beneficial to Kyle, and gives him a little more security. I think it shows him the Bears really want to give him a good look at being the teams future starter. But if he fails they get a cheap back-up for the 2009 season. While Rex, this is it for him. If he doesn’t get that starting job in training camp or steal it during the season he’s done, finito, good bye see ya later. This deal after only giving Rex a one year deal, has to tell him the team isn’t sold on your abilities and isn’t sure you can lead this team.
It’s going to be an interesting training camp in Chicago. I can’t wait to see how it plays out. For all you Bears fans thou, I hope Orton can deliver or next years draft they’ll be looking heavy at QB
