Philadelphia Phillies new closer Brad Lidge is already having problems with his right knee. It’s the same knee that he had off-season surgery on to replace torn cartilage. Here’s how it happened. Lidge was throwing live batting practice at Ashburn Field and caught his spike in the mound. He had just started in his session, and pretty much imediately had to stop. Charlie Manuel, pitching coach Rich Dubee and athletic trainer Scott Sheridan all hurried out and ended his session. After that Lidge limped all the way to the clubhouse.
Lidge afterwards did admit that his knee isn’t even 100% yet, but he would be ready for opening day. At the moment, the recent injury isn’t considered serious. He says he stopped throwing out of precaution because there was irritation.
This definitely bears some watching, because this can seriously hurt the Phillies enter set up for their pitching staff. Brett Myers was only moved back to the rotation because of Lidge. If this injury is more serious then let on, you could see Tom Gordon go back to closing temporarily.
