Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland pretty much confirmed today that you will not be seeing short stop Carlo Guillen at shortstop anymore. “We’ve made that move (with Guillen going to first base),” Leyland said. “He’s at first, and I’d like to make that consistent.”
What does this mean for the Tigers? First it means Ramon Santiago is virtually a lock to be on next year’s roster. The team will need a true backup shortstop if Guillen can’t shift over on Edgar Renteria’s off days. Second, it means Guillen will get even more time learning first base during the season and not have to worry about oh i have to play short tomorrow.
This of course would be barring any injuries. If Edgar Renteria goes down in spring training, or the DL for an extended point during the season, I have no doubts that the Tigers would shift Guillen back to short. There’s no way Santiago would start for a prolonged period, even with that power packed lineup.
