The Chicago Cubs have 3 candidates for their closing job this year, and manager Lou Pinella has been very careful not to give away any info on who he’s giving the lead too. For those interested the 3 options are Kerry Wood, Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry. I know what a stellar group. Well Sunday Night during an interview at WGN, Pinella acknowledged that his front runner is Howry. Partly because of the job he did last year, and also durability questions surrounding Wood.
Bob Howry did a decent job in the role last year filling in for Ryan Dempster. Howry had 8 saves last year in 81 innings with a 3.32 era. Here’s the interesting part, Howry was early spring training favorite each of the last 2 seasons. What happened? He never had the job at the end of camp.
Cubs fans remember Lou Pinella changes his mind as often as the wind blows out there in Chitown. Till camp is over I wouldn’t listen to anything he says on who he’s looking at as a closer. I feel within 2 months thou if healthy, its going to be Kerry Wood. His stuff is still to good when healthy not to be the closer out of that group.
