No surprise here, Coco Crisp wants to be in center field for the Boston Red Sox on opening day. Will he even be a Red Sox by then is a whole different story. After a late season surge by a little known minor leaguer Jacob Ellsbury there is now doubt amongst many baseball minds and fans on who should be the teams center fielder. Who could be more productive? Who gives the team the best chance to win? Who sets the team up for a better future?
Lots of questions. So are there answers yet? Nope, and thats why trade rumors keep swirling around Mr. Crisp. What do the Sox want? Where will he go? It seems like every day there is a different rumor. What does Coco think about all of this? When it comes to the trade rumors he wouldn’t tell the Boston Globe, but he did say only rumors he acknowledges are the ones that come from his agent.
In the early part of this off-season his agent did say that if Ellsbury wins the starting job then Coco would be better off being traded. The Globe asked him would he revisit those thoughts. “Honestly, I think so,” Crisp said. “‘Cause I want to play. Like I said, I wouldn’t be happy sitting on the bench. A lot of people say, well, I don’t deserve it. Well, that’s understandable too. I didn’t have a good offensive year like I did in the past. I think I proved myself that I can win healthy and shown that my defense is way better than what people thought. People think that my offense is terrible. Now it’s time to show them that my offense really isn’t. Went through a couple of bruised up years, everybody goest through that. Unfortunately I just went through that when I came over here to mega-media central.”
Personally, I can’t see the Red Sox keeping Crisp if Jacob wins the job. He’d be a solid fourth outfielder but a very unhappy one. The Red Sox are an organization that has enough nut cases in their locker room that they don’t need someone mopping around. Manny and others are crazy, but at least they come across happy no need having Coco bring them down.
