Eagles Sheppard seeking trade?

Ok, so this afternoon there were numerous rumors making their way around the internet that Philadelphia Eagles’ star corner back Lito Sheppard was given permission to seek a trade. Many Eagles fans were probably getting ready to jump off the Ben Franklin Bridge, because when this guy is healthy he’s their best cover man. And if this team is to win next year, they need Sheppard locking down the top wideouts.

The rumors originally started when Comcast SportsNet’s Derrick Gunn said “He’s felt that he has outperformed his contract, especially when he made the Pro Bowl (last season), and that after the 2007 season, he was going to see if the Eagles would redo his contract or he was going to push for a trade … First and foremost, Lito wants to be in Philadelphia, but he wants to be what he is considering to be in the top 5 or 10 cornerbacks in the NFL.”

Lito’s current contract runs through 2011, he’s only scheduled to make $2 million next year, $3 mil in 2009, $3.7 mil in 2010 and $4.25 million in 2011. So basically he is unhappy with his contract.

So whats the truth?

Eagles fans can get down from the ledge, get back in your car, and drive back into the city. Lito Sheppard HAS NOT BEEN GIVEN PERMISSION TO SEEK A TRADE! Lito Sheppard actually thought all of this was joke. Gunn called the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback to seek its validity.
And then on the 6:30pm edition of SportsNite the guy who started the rumor said “He told me he knew nothing about this. As a matter of fact, he thought I was joking until he realized that I wasn’t.”

So as of now Sheppard will be an Eagle, whether he holds out for a contract restructure thats a different story……..
