Its only March and New York Mets closer Billy Wagner is already complaining. What about now? Last year’s work load. Basically Billy doesn’t think he should be throwing any meaningless innings anymore at his age, and therefore should not be throwing any where near the 68 he threw last season. Wags said “But you can’t overexpose. You can’t go out there and throw meaningless innings. You have to be used in your element, in your role, and not abused.”
Wagner will be 37 during the season and he does have a good point he’s old and his body is pretty brittle now i’d say. His injuries definitely played a part in the Mets collapse last season, since their bullpen is pretty much trash. Last year he missed time in August for dead arm syndrome, and in September with back spasms. He continues on using Trevor Hoffman Mariano Rivera as examples, “I think, at this stage of the game and my career . . . you look at Trevor [Hoffman]. Trevor doesn’t come out there for meaningless innings. And neither does Mariano [Rivera]. Mariano ain’t coming out there very often.”
Wags argument holds some weight as him and Mariano, both pitched in about 10 back to back games, but Mo threw more times in three straight games. While hoffman threw 12 back to back games and 4 times in three straight.
Personally, I hate the Mets so in my opinion Wagner needs to shut his mouth and finally start crying for once. Every year he’s got something to whine about or yet someone to bitch about. He has to realize his bullpen is atrocious especially if Duaner Sanchez can’t get back to pre-injury self. So his team NEEDS him, but then again who has ever really thought of Wags as a team player, I know i haven’t.
BUT, Wags is getting up there in age, and maybe the team should start look at conserving him for the stretch run. Having a healthy and rested Wagner for the stretch as the NL East is going to be in a dog fight between the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and of course the Mets.
