Injury strikes Brewers’ rotation.

Just a couple days into Spring Training, and the Milwaukee Brewers will be without one of their best starters for a few weeks. Yovani Gallardo has torn cartilage in his left knee and it will require surgery. Gallardo was initially injured during a routine throwing session a few days ago and had swelling in the knee afterward. All Brewers pitchers and catchers underwent physicals today to start camp and team doctor William Raasch discovered the tear.

Raasch will perform surgery on Tuesday and then Gallardo would start rehab. While it is a relatively minor injury it will take around 4 weeks of rehab to get all strength back in his knee. After that he’d only have 2 weeks left in camp to get back in to game shape and stretch his arm out to where he could be an effective starter. So with that being said, you can expect Gallardo to start the beginning of the season on the Disabled List.

For Brewers fans, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing as Gallardo is only 22 years old. Much like the Yankees and Joba Chamberlain you don’t want to overwork these young arms and have them fully break down before they even entire their primes. Remember, Gallardo did have 17 starts last year in the majors. The team most likely wouldn’t want to go above 200 innings with their young ace in the making, so beginning the season on the DL might not be a bad thing. Especially with it being a relatively minor injury. Just hope your young bats can keep the team in the early season games while he recuperates.
