So much for the idea of Jeremy Shockey not playing for the NFL Super Bowl Champions New York Giants. Giants General Manager Jerry Reese told Newsdsay reporters today that Shockey “is our starting tight end” And that the Giants have no plans to release, trade, sign a free agent or draft a tight end.
Many have believed Shockey would be a player essentially thrown off the team after his late season leg injury. Many fans believe getting him out of that locker room and huddle was a key in the late season tear the team went on. Especially with the emergence of rookie TE Kevin Boss. Former Giants backup quarterback Tim Hasselbeck spoke out often in the weeks after Shockey’s injury about how it was a blessing of sorts. “Guys on the team don’t like Jeremy Shockey,” Hasselbeck said on a Sirius satellite radio show the week before the Super Bowl. “They’re relieved he’s not around.”
Some have thought other teams would line up to trade for Shockey’s services. But GM Reese also said “Would you make a trade for someone with a rod in his leg who can hardly walk?”
My take, I’m glad he’s staying put. As a Giant’s fan you can’t deny the play-making abilities he brings to this offense when healthy. And a team with two solid TE’s can make this offense even more dynamic. Granted he MAY be some of a cancer in the clubhouse but I have a hard time believe he was the sole problem for a lot of the teams struggles in the middle to late part of the season. And also looking at his contract and cap numbers, its better to keep him then let him go.
