Dolphins eyeing Chris Long

Could the Miami Dolphins throw a curveball with the first pick in this years NFL Draft? Yes, they could according to a few NFL experts. NFL Network’s Adam Scheffer and NBC’s Peter King both have said that the Dolphins are considering drafting Virginia DE Chris Long. For those of you who don’t really follow college football, Chris is the son of FOX analyst and Raiders great Howie Long. Long played under Al Groh in a 3-4 defense at Virginia, and Groh is a disciple of the new boss in Miami, Bill Parcells. Long’s 6 ft 4 inches, and 278 lb , not an ideal size for a defensive end in the 3-4 but could easily play that OLB/DE mix that’s become popular in the NFL. And with his hard nosed old school style of play when it comes to effort he should easily adapt to any style of play.

There are others thou that think Boston College QB Matt Ryan will be the first draft pick. ESPN’s Mel Kiper compares him to Eli Manning at this point in the draft. Considering the recent Super Bowl in not a bad comparision. BUT, this is Mel Kiper where all he knows is this draft and how many players has he ranked high become complete duds. ESPN’s Todd McShay also has Ryan going #1 in his latest mock draft.

I’d love to see the Dolphins mix it up and go for Chris Long, maybe trade down a pick or two to do so thou if possible. The team isn’t ready to protect a young QB, so go the unconventional route and take a defensive lineman. Anyone remember the choice of the Houston Texans a couple years back with Mario Williams, worked out pretty well for them.
