Royals not interested in Sosa.
February 29, 2008
There were reports from ESPNdeportes.com that the Kansas City Royals are getting renewed interest in Sammy Sosa. Now earlier in the off-season the Royals were definitely considering Sosa but didn’t like the demand for guaranteed regular playing time. Slammin’ Sammy is also good friends with outfielder Jose Guillen who has been pushing for the team to sign him. Guillen believes Sosa can provide the veteran leadership this young team sorely needs.
But what are the Royals plans. “We’re very comfortable with the current group of players we have in camp competing for spots on our 25-man roster,” general manager Dayton Moore said Friday before the Royals spring training road trip. He also says there is no need for them to sign anyone at the moment, that they are happy with how their team is currently set up.
I agree the Royals shouldn’t go after Sammy. This is a good young team, who dare I say has a chance to be exciting and fairly competitive. Not close to playoff caliber, but won’t be the pushovers they have been the last decade.
Is Crumpler close to a deal with Seattle?
February 29, 2008
Is former Atlanta Falcons tight end, Alge Crumpler close to a deal with the Seattle Seahawks? All depends which newspaper report you want to believe. Lets first start with the facts. Crumpler was with his agent, James Williams, in Seattle today. Crumpler did take a physical. The two sides did discuss money and what it would be like for Crumpler to play for the Seahawks.
Thats about the last of the true facts. Lets break down the rumors.
The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reports that Crumpler is close to a deal with the Seahawks. “The connection with the people that have left the Falcons is important,” Williams said. “With Coach [Jim] Mora, Mr. [Tim] Ruskell and Patrick Kerney in Seattle, that causes us to be comfortable.” Connectiions? Mora former coach, Ruskell for Atlanta GM, and Kerney former teammate.
The News-Tribune reports that there is no deal in place and not even a firm contract offer on the table. Frank Hughes of the news-tribune.com says that he spoke with Crumpler’s agent about a few things. Those include Crumpler not signing a deal but that they are confident Seattle could make the room underneath the salary cap to sign his client. When asked about Crumpler’s physical, the response was “I don’t want to speak for them, but I think it went fine.”
So really this whole Crumpler situation is still up in the air and no where close to being solved. Just like I said in an earlier post this thing will be fun to watch unfold. Crumpler has already visited the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tennessee Titans. He should soon be on his way for a meet and greet with the Buffalo Bills coaching and management staff. I do wonder thou how healthy he is thou with that comment from his agent on the physical status.

Chavez already having back problems
February 29, 2008
Oakland Athletics third baseman Eric Chavez is already experiencing back problems and we are just days in to camp. Chavez has had problems on and off for a couple years now, its kept him out of the lineup and hampered his production when he is in it. He has a surgically repaired back and has been complaining of increased stiffness since workouts began. To offset this he was given an epidural shot this morning. He’s going to be shut down completely for 4 to 5 days to let his body rest and the shot to do its job. The shot is designed to reduce inflammation.
If all goes well, Chavez should be able to start playing games by the middle of March. While this doesn’t put his regular season status into jeopardy it doesn’t bode well for his future. If his back is already acting up you can be sure that once the heat starts kicking in july and august he’ll be in pain again.
Jags sign Porter, Lemon and make trade
February 29, 2008
The Jacksonville Jaguars had a busy day making a couple signs and a trade. The moves include signing wide receiver Jerry Porter, QB Cleo Lemon and trading for wide receiver Troy Williamson. Lets break down all the moves:
- Jerry Porter - Porter receives $30 million over 6-years, with $10 million of it guaranteed. Personally at this point in his career I think that amount is a little high, but what free agency is bringing this year I guess it could be considered a relative bargain. Porter should be a big threat in the red zone for the Jags, and look for him to start along side Reggie Williams or Matt Jones.
- Cleo Lemon - Lemon signed a 3-year contract worth just under $9 million. Lemon played respectably on a horrible Miami Dolphins team last year. He should go into the camp as a starter over Quinn Gray and should actually be an upgrade.
- Troy Williamson - The team traded with the Minnesota Vikings to get his services. The Jags sent a 6th round pick to Minnesota which could improve based on his performance. Williamson would of already been a question mark to make the team pre-Jerry Porter, but now with Porter on the team he is without a doubt NOT guaranteed a spot.
Leyland sets Tigers rotation for season.
February 29, 2008
The Detroit Tigers are ahead of the ball as manager Jim Leyland announced his starting rotation. Opening day without a doubt is Justin Verlander with Jeremy Bonderman starting in game two. The surprise comes after that, many would think newly acquired Dontrelle Willis would follow as the teams #3 starter. NOPE! Kenny Rogers will be taking that role, with Willis or Nate Robertson following. Whichever doesn’t start then would obviously be rounding out the rotation.
Like I said most would of expected Willis to take the 3 spot, especially with him pitching in between Verlander and Rogers this spring. But according to Leyland, this just sets Willis up better to start the teams 4th or 5th game. I agree with Leyland that Dontrelle should start off in the back end of the rotation. He’s coming off a horrendous season and has to kind of prove himself against the much tougher American League lineups. I’m sure if Willis proves himself in the first half of the season, Leyland would adjust his rotation at the All-Star Break.
Mets brass torn on Lohse
February 29, 2008
The New York Mets are still toying around with the idea of Kyle Lohse, but upper management is quite divided on if they should go that route or not. According to Ken Rosenthal’s latest article there are pretty much two different takes on Lohse.
- Some believe that Lohse could be a valuable commodity as insurance for the oft injured, oft ineffective Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez.
- Others in the organization feel he’d be a waste after signing Johan Santana. With Santana they have their five lined up.
- And then others also feel he has no value as a 6th starter, as the team already has Mike Pelfrey penciled into that role
There are also a couple teams still interested in Lohse. Those would be the Baltimore Orioles and the St Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals have been pursuing him but some sources have told Rosenthal that the team is not interested. Now the Orioles seem to be very interested but only at a reasonable rate.
I can’t see him signing before the middle of spring training at the earliest. He’s not moving from his contract demands and you know what no team is rightfully willing to pay it.

Eagles make their move, Samuel and Clemons
February 29, 2008
Looking to boost the talent on an aging defense the Philadelphia Eagles hit the free agent market in a big way. In very non-typical fashion the Eagles spent money like there was no tomorrow, showing the urgency of a team desperate to get back into the playoffs. The first move is official, its the long rumored signing of corner back Asante Samuel. The second, could come tomorrow or within days and thats defensive end Chris Clemons.
First Samuel. Samuel gets a 6-year deal which is more then expected, earlier today rumors had him getting $47.2 million over 5 years. So just maybe that year was thrown in for salary cap purposes. The exact break down of the contract has not been released but its believed to be $10 million per season over the first 3 years. While I don’t feel Samuel is a true pro-bowl corner he goes to a defense that fits his style much better. You’re going what? didn’t he play for the New England Patriots? Yes, he did but the Patriots scheme wasn’t always to all-out blitz a quarter back, and if you go back and watch the Super Bowl and other Pats games he was exposed in the games that his team did not get to the QB. Going into Jim Johnson’s system, he should easily look like a pro-bowler as he blitzes almost every other play.
Second Clemons. Clemons’ agent Donal Henderson told Comast that his client is going to be in town taking a physical on Saturday. Usually when that happens if all goes well then the deal is signed, the Eagles wouldn’t be bringing him in if it wasn’t close to a done deal. Clemons should get the chance to increase his sack totals, as he is definitely a pass rusher in a pass rushing system. Last year the 26 year old had 8 sacks.
Both of these are huge moves for a team who was starting to get old and honestly pretty weak on the defensive side of the ball. Their corner situation could get sticky but if Lito Sheppard is healthy. The Eagles have 3 solid CBs with Sheppard, Samuel and Sheldon Brown so if all are healthy they’ll all want their playing times. The positive there thou is the Eagles run a lot of 3 corner sets which should keep them all on the field quite a bit, and actually be an offensive coordinators nightmare. Johnson will really be able to dial up the blitz and who knows where it would be coming from.
I hate the Eagles, but finally Andy Reid and the rest of management made some smart decisions.
